Staying Active Along the Wild Atlantic Way
How to maintain physical vitality and mental wellbeing through walking, exploration, and outdoor engagement along Ireland's most stunning coastal routes.

I didn't start out as a retirement coach. For eight years, I worked as a health promotion officer with Galway City Council, designing wellness programmes for older adults. That's where I first saw the real challenges people face when major life changes hit — and I realised most of them weren't getting the right support.
Watching people struggle through transitions that could've been manageable with proper guidance motivated me to get my formal coaching credentials. I completed my International Coach Federation certification in 2016 and haven't looked back since. What I've learned is this: retirement isn't an ending. It's a massive life change that needs the same attention and planning we give to career moves or relationship changes.
Over the past decade, I've worked with more than 2,000 people across Connacht on retirement readiness and active ageing. I've also become deeply involved with Men's Shed Ireland — facilitating peer support groups and witnessing firsthand how powerful community engagement is for mental health and wellbeing in later life. The research backs this up, but so does watching real people come alive when they're part of something meaningful.
My Master's degree in Health Promotion from University College Galway and my training in positive psychology and gerontology give me the evidence base. But what really drives my work is challenging the ageist narratives we've accepted in Ireland. I'm convinced that people can thrive in their later years — not just survive them.
14 years of hands-on experience helping Irish adults prepare for and thrive through retirement
We work through financial planning, identity transitions, social connections, and purposeful activity. It's not just about having enough money — it's about building a life that actually matters to you.
Physical health, mental wellbeing, cognitive vitality. I've developed evidence-based wellness programmes specifically for older adults in Galway and beyond. We focus on what actually works for this life stage.
I've facilitated peer support groups and community initiatives throughout County Galway. Men's Shed isn't just woodworking — it's belonging, purpose, and social connection when people need it most.
I've hiked extensively along the Wild Atlantic Way and use these experiences to help people stay physically active, mentally sharp, and deeply connected to their environment throughout their later years.
I'm driven by challenging ageist narratives and helping people see later life as an opportunity for growth. It's about reframing retirement from decline to discovery.
Retirement, empty nest, loss of work identity, major health changes — I help people navigate these profound shifts with practical strategies and emotional support grounded in positive psychology.
Key Achievement: Designed and delivered wellness programmes for 2,000+ individuals across Connacht. Led the development of Men's Shed community initiatives throughout County Galway, combining peer support with practical skills training.
I don't believe in one-size-fits-all retirement. Every person I work with has different values, different challenges, and different dreams for this chapter of their life. That's why my approach is grounded in understanding each person's unique situation first.
What I've learned from 14 years in this field is that retirement readiness isn't primarily about financial planning — though that matters. It's about identity. When work stops being your identity, who are you? What gives your life meaning? How do you stay connected to people and purpose? These are the real questions that keep people awake at night.
I combine research from gerontology, positive psychology, and health promotion with real-world experience. This isn't guesswork — it's informed by what actually works for Irish adults in their later years.
Men's Shed taught me that people thrive when they belong to something. My work always emphasises connection — whether through formal programmes or informal peer networks. Isolation kills vitality. Community builds it.
Staying active isn't just about exercise. It's about being engaged with life — whether that's hiking the Wild Atlantic Way, learning something new, or contributing to your community. Vitality comes from movement and engagement.
I'm on a mission to challenge ageist narratives. Later life isn't decline — it's a different chapter with its own opportunities, freedoms, and possibilities. That mindset shift changes everything.
What motivates me most is witnessing people rediscover purpose and vitality in their later years. When someone who felt lost suddenly finds direction, when a quiet person becomes the life of the Men's Shed group, when someone completes that Wild Atlantic Way walk they'd been dreaming about — that's when I know this work matters.
